Hey guys! I’m Caitlin, and my high school life sucked. Not because of the kids or the homework, but because of one of my teachers. Mrs. Hadfield. The meanest, most bitter woman I knew. And boy, do I have a story for you.
She was my first teacher in high school, early in the morning. She hated me. How do I know that? Well, every time I would turn in my homework or tests, she would try to find anything wrong with it and take points off. Even though I was a good student, she always tried to lower my grade. The pettiest thing she’s done was tell me I didn’t fill in the circle all the way, and took off half a point. I didn’t know why she disliked me so much. I never caused trouble, I didn’t talk to her outside of class, I’ve never gotten detention. And yet, she hated me the most. Well one day, her dislike for me began to grow more obvious to me and the rest of the class. It started off more subtle. Whenever I got a question wrong in the middle of class, she would call me and idiot and then tell me the answer. After that, she would ridicule and mock me if I was wrong. The other students tried calling her out on it, but she threatened to fail them to quiet them. It worked. The verbal abuse soon started to affect my grades slowly. I couldn’t concentrate and constantly second guessed myself because of her comments. Two months later, I went to the principal and told him my English teacher was being extremely rude to me and abusing her power as an authority figure. He told me she was a transfer from a prominent school, and I would need clear evidence for him to relieve her of her teaching position. I understood perfectly.
So from then on, whenever I was in her class I would record her lecture. Sure, maybe it was illegal, but at that point I didn’t care. As the weeks went by, the recordings slowly began to rack up, including the amount of insults. No sooner than three weeks later, I had enough. In her class, when she asked a question, I answered. She passive-aggressively told me I was an idiot for thinking that was the answer. After she told me that, I stood from my seat and walked out of class. She yelled after me and said I was acting like a child for being proved wrong. Little did she know, I was on my way to the bathroom to assemble my evidence. While that happened, Mrs. Hadfield went to the principal herself and requested I be suspended indefinitely. When he asked why, she said I was being disrespectful, disruptive, and slacked off in her class.
I entered his office right before she left. When he asked if everything Mrs. Hadfield said was true, I confidently told him I have evidence that it’s the opposite. He told me I was more than welcomed to present it, and I did. As the recordings were playing, both him and Mrs. Hadfield sat there and heard her say things to me that were both degrading and unprofessional. When the recordings were finished playing, she desperately tried to explain that she didn’t mean to say those things degradingly, but as a way of motivation. Both the principal and I thought otherwise. He asked me to email those videos to him and he’s going to send those to Mrs. Hadfield’s main employer. She tried to justify her actions, but he didn’t buy it for a second. He thanked me for bringing that to his attention and not causing any ridiculous outbursts.
The next day, Mrs. Hadfield was nowhere to be seen. Her picture and name were removed from both the school and its website. From what I’ve heard, she was fired by her employer and now she’s jobless. Not to mention, this will be a permanent stain on her resume. The other students were also grateful. Some teachers are great and helpful, but others do more harm than good. This teacher, in particular, aimed her toxicity at me for some reason. Maybe now she’s learned that her abusive behavior won’t be tolerated by anyone.
