Don't be afRAID (of RAID) | How to access hardware RAID-5 array with HBA and software
Some people have commented on my past videos about RAID controllers being undesirable because they "lock you in" to a specific brand and model of RAID controller. The concern is that if the RAID controller fails, and you're not able to find the *exact* same model RAID controller, then your data will no longer be accessible. This is simply not true.
Other comments also express concern that RAID controllers use some "arbitrary" or "proprietary" disk data format. This is also not true of all vendors, and in particular not the case for LSI/Broadcom/Avago technologies. Most LSI RAID controllers use the Common RAID Disk Data Format (DDF):
https://www.snia.org/tech_activities/standards/curr_standards/ddf
And you can read the technical specifications here:
https://www.snia.org/sites/default/files/SNIA_DDF_Technical_Position_v2.0.pdf
So, in this video, I'm going to create a RAID-5 array using an old IBM ServeRAID M5015 controller. I'm going to then migrate to a newer LSI MegaRAID 9271-8i controller and show you that the RAID-5 array still works even with a new controller. Finally, I'm going to get rid of all RAID controllers and just use an HBA and show you how to access the hardware RAID-5 array using software.
