Eating Electrocuted Elephant meat is dangerous! By: Joseph Sheefeni

On Wednesday night an elephant corpse caught in electricity wires left some Kunene region inhabitants in the dark. The Minister now warns communities not to consume the meat of these elephants. The Ministry of Environment and Tourism has warned residents in the Sesfontein and Orupupa conservancy of the Kunene region not to consume the meat of an elephant that died on Wednesday night after was electrocuted when it tried to push down a utility pole. According to the Ministry officials who dehorned the corpse, a number of community members were making inquiries on whether they could slaughter the dead elephant and share cuts of the meat. The Ministry has since de-tusked the dead bull and maintains that is part of a large resident group that has been causing trouble in the conservancies, pushing down trees, even chasing cattle and goats. Asser Ujaha a goat farmer in the area suspects that the animals crossed over from Etosha National Park as a result of the drought at the end of last year. Ujaha also says that because of the incident, power supply in the area has been affected. He said that farmers already face the challenge of cheetahs and leopards that prey on their livestock, now they have to accept the reality of living with the elephants.
