U.S. Soldiers Help Afghan Women, Children Over Wall at Kabul Airport
A video showed a toddler being handed to a soldier over the gates of Kabul airport as thousands of people desperate to flee after the Taliban takeover of the city gathered outside.
The footage, captured on Tuesday, showed crowds of people pushing, shoving and climbing walls as they attempted to get to an airfield where military planes were evacuating people from the country.
Another video shot on Wednesday showed US soldiers firing tear gas to disperse those gathered while Taliban soldiers drove past crowds, according to NGO Rise to Peace.
Thousands have rushed to the airport over recent days amid uncertainty and concerns that the Taliban will reimpose a brutal rule, which included largely confining women to their homes and holding public executions, many Afghans have been trying to flee the country.
Many Western nations have been evacuating officials and nationals over the past few days along with Afghans who had helped their countries and diplomats since the US led invasion in 2001.
At Kabul's international airport, military evacuation flights continued on Thursday, according to flight-tracking data.
However, access to the airport remained difficult.
Taliban fighters fired into the air to try to control the crowds gathered at the airport's blast walls. Men, women and children fled.
Fighter jets later roared overhead, but no airstrike accompanied their pass.
The Taliban so far have offered no specifics on how they will lead, other than to say they will be guided by Shariah, or Islamic, law.
They are in talks with senior officials of previous Afghan governments.
