Mirela’a family lived like other families in a gypsy camp and were not much different than the others. Women did all the work in the home. They lit the fires and cooked food for their large families. There were seven children in their family. She was the fifth in birth order. Often she went to the city with her married sisters. They walked around the station square and offered to tell fortunes.

They didn’t really knew and foresaw the future. The most important thing was for them to make money in order not to go home empty-handed.

In the gypsy camp children grow up early. Girls know that they can be married at the age of 13 or 14. After marriage, they no longer go to school, but are engaged with family and children. But before they are married they must learn to read and write.

Mirela went to school at the age of 10 in a special gypsy class. The teacher was beautiful and intelligent. She told them interesting stories about the lives of famous people. Mirela listened, and wanted to be like her, so confident and well educated.

Mirela tried to study hard and soon became the best student in the class. Her dream was to be able to continue her studies. This dream never left her.

One day her father started talking about her marriage. He said that she was grown up enough and it was time to find a husband for her. She immediately guessed who her fiancé would be. Recently, Yanko began to come to visit them with his father. He pretended that he was solving important issues with men, but while they talked he never took his dark eyes off of Mirela.

A few days later their engagement was announced. That night Mirela did not fall asleep. All her hopes and dreams were suddenly gone. It is impossible for a gypsy girl to resist the will of her father. She could only accept what he had planned for me. From that day forward, she didn’t go to school anymore.

Actually happened the celebration began at noon. Gypsies were waiting for Mirela to appear. Yanko was there also. When he saw he in a veil and white dress, he stopped dead in his tracks. Then he handed her a bouquet of flowers. The wedding guests sang, danced, and clinked their glasses.

Yanko was not well suited to married life. He did not know how to and did not want to work. He preferred to spend time idly and this left Mirela to have to do everything herself.

Her husband was not happy and he often began to express his discontent. The fact that she did not get pregnant in the first two years really bugged him. He knew that after the second child he would special allotment of money from the government and this would allow him to solve his financial problems.

Sometimes in the evening he was annoyed. He screamed, and once he hit her. She began to think about divorce, although this is unacceptable there. She increasingly began to recall her teacher and her childhood dreams that still lived within her.

One day in the store someone called her, she turned around and saw her, the teacher of her dreams. She said that she could arrange for Mirela to be admitted to a school where she would could live in a dormitory. After graduation, she said Mirela could get a good job.

The decision to run away from the gypsy camp wasn’t easy. She had often asked herself whether she could live that other life? Then after Yanko hit her again, she said to herself, “Yes, I can”. She contacted her teacher and she helped her enroll in an evening school. After that she began studying in a vocational school. Her area of specialization will help her find a good job and improve her life.

Of course, she still looks with dismay at her future, but she firmly believes that under no circumstances can she endure humiliation. Everyone must believe in themselves and strive for the best.
