From an extremely well preserved shipwreck thousands of years old to a city from legend that turned out to be real, here are 9 mysterious underwater archaeological discoveries.

9. Atlit-Yam
In 1984, marine archaeologist Ehud Galili discovered the submerged ruins of a Neolithic fishing village 33 feet (10 meters) beneath the water’s surface off Israel’s Carmel Coast.

The settlements were constructed on dry land, but they slowly sank into the ocean as sea levels rose toward the end of the last Ice Age, according to a groundbreaking study published in the journal PLOS One.

A British fossil hunter named Steve Etches recently found a surprisingly detailed fossil of a previously unknown prehistoric sea dragon-like creature in Dorset, along England’s southern coast.
