13. SOUNDBITE Godfrey Deeny, Editor, Fashion Wire Daily: "It was a fantastic show. Dior released these results today that are 42 percent increase in sales last year. Everyone is depressed but they are optimistic, and the one country in the world that has optimism is China and this was completely about China, they have opened it up as he biggest market in the future. I thought there was lots of fun, lots of energy, and within all the madness there was once again all the brilliant clothes. Wonderful little designs, great shirts, wonderful jackets. That was pretty amazing, you have got to say. Even if it started too hours late 'merci pour le cadeaux', thanks for the present."

GALLIANO LOOKS TO CHINA FOR PARIS DIOR SHOW

'8 Mile' star Brittany Murphy and rapper Eve were among the guests for John Galliano's Chinese-inspired haute couture show for Christian Dior in Paris Monday (20 January 2003)

The audience also included celebrity model-actress Elizabeth Hurley (with a mystery male companion) along with a much-publicised mystery man as well as French President Jacques Chirac's wife, Bernadette.

The setting was Galliano's favourite: a tent near the Auteuil racetrack in Paris' Bois de Boulogne.

The spring-summer show started two hours late, but was a sensation, opening with a red-clad Chinese kung-fu group, kicking and swirling horsewhips. They were followed by flip-flopping acrobats from Shanghai.

But Galliano's loving use of fabrics stole the thunder.

While perhaps only the richest, most dedicated followers of fashion would be bold enough to wear his costumes, they were still stunning to observe.

The lacquer-red catwalk was full of brocade fabrics and willow-patterned chiffon. There were drapes and swaths of heavy silk shot with gold lame, and tulles in shades of canary yellow, robin's egg blues or deep turquoise.

Silhouettes depended on the fabrics, not the model underneath.

The models were hidden beneath mask-like makeup, silver headpieces, huge ostrich-feather hats and coifs, and rippling tiered underskirts.

Accessories included S&M buckled platform sandals.

The show moved. It was ingenious. But these Dior creations are not for most dinner parties or even Hollywood awards. As Galliano has already shown, his clothes are often Alice in Wonderland stuff.
