Making the Hoplite's Scabbard

#blacksmith #blacksmithing

In this video,I make a scabbard for my latest sword, a greek xiphos. The scabbard is a composite build. I start with two strips of light fine-grained wood...in this case poplar. A shallow trough is carved into each half and they are then glued together creating a sleeve that encompasses the blade and allows it to slide in and out freely. A strip of felt around the opening creates the proper snugness to keep the sword in place and not rattling around. The wood is then shaped and covered with leather. Next, a bronze throat and chape are created and carefully fitted into place. lastly, a belt, or more accurately a baldric is made from leather and bronze fittings. This makes the scabbard wearable, placing the sword in the proper position to be drawn quickly.
