Global Express 21h Day! Cape Town to Quebec City - The Global Life - Vlog #36
Welcome back to the Global Life!!
As we finally make our way back from South Africa to Canada, a lot needs to happen before we can even get off the ground. A 3rd pilot joined us in Cape Town, in order for us to be able to make the journey home.
Why? With almost 21h of duty day ahead of us, the regulations allow us to bring a 3rd crew member to act as relief pilot. This is made possible by the very unique configuration of the Global XRS/6000 that provides an actual crew rest station rather than a simple jump seat. With the ability to lay down, close the window and the "door", we answer the crew rest requirements which basically means a pilot can get shut-eye and sleep while the other two carry on.
The theory of it all is great... but in practicality, dividing two 8h legs evenly between 3 pilots was a challenge.
That being said, leaving Cape Town in the early morning, we made our way to Dakar, Senegal, for a quick fuel stop and to pick up more food. The flight there was uneventful other than losing CPDLC and radio comms for a while on the western coast of Africa, but we came back within range fast and everything was as it should be. If you want to learn more about navigating Africa make sure to watch the previous video.
From Dakar the rest of the trip home was non-event. We made it to Quebec City shortly after nightfall, and concluded a very long day of flying there. The cold was a shock to the system after a few weeks in Africa, but we survived!
I apologize for the lack of ATC audio once more. My GoPro adapter seems finicky but I'll work on that.
Thank you again for stopping by. More to come soon. Cheers and Safe Flying!
