Katlehong Simulation
The South African Red Cross Society, in collaboration with the IFRC Pretoria Cluster and key partners, hosted an Impact-Based Forecasting (IbF) training in Katlehong, Gauteng. This important initiative brought together disaster risk practitioners and humanitarian actors to strengthen early warning and early action systems across Southern Africa.
Impact-Based Forecasting moves beyond traditional weather forecasting by focusing not just on what the weather will be, but what it will do. By combining meteorological forecasts with localised risk and vulnerability data, IbF allows responders to anticipate the potential impacts of hazards on communities, infrastructure, and livelihoods. This enables more timely, targeted, and cost-effective interventions such as evacuations, cash assistance, or pre-positioning of emergency supplies—ultimately reducing the human and economic toll of disasters.
This training supports a broader shift from reactive crisis response to proactive risk management and resilience-building. It strengthens the capacity of National Societies and partners to take early action based on forecasts and credible risk analysis, aligning with global humanitarian goals for anticipatory action.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to the IFRC, National Societies from the Pretoria and Harare Clusters, the South African Weather Service, FAO, WFP, and the City of Ekurhuleni Disaster Management Centre for their commitment and collaboration in making this training and simulation a success.
