Which automaker can actually challenge tesla and how far they are?

Out of total number of electric vehicles sold in 2019 of all the automakers, more than 80% EV’s sold were Tesla vehicles. Several big automakers who are investing a lot but the EV market belongs to one brand TESLA

In July 2003 a Silicon Valley startup named Tesla Motors was started. Their plan started with a low volume expensive sports car “THE ROADSTER”. Tesla’s plan was to start with a high-performance high margin car and use that revenue to produce an affordable car.

Their next goal was to build mass market premium sedan.

In March 2009 Tesla unveiled the Model S. Model S impressed many people and after facing many challenges Tesla was able to start the production of Model S which came into the market in 2012.

The Model S is totally a different type of car. When the Model S came out people were little skeptical but after the reviews came out this Model S is out of this world sedan that changed the game.
The model S was only the beginning of the revolution.

Later Tesla unveiled their SUV the Model X in 2015. Tesla slowly expanding its car fleet.

Then came the Iconic model 3.
A high-volume affordable car. Musk said you will not be able to buy a better car for $35,000. By 2016 Elon musk and Tesla looked unstoppable. People were lining outside the showroom to make the preorder for a car that they have not seen because it was a Tesla.
But the following year Tesla struggled to produce cars. The media was constantly against tesla. Later tesla was able to address this issue and was able to deliver more vehicles.
Elon and Tesla Concentrated on the Autonomous driving. No other car manufacturer is able to push the limits like Tesla did.
Supercharging Networks-
Tesla started making high powered charging stations across the world which will make extremely convenient to EV owners to travel long distances.
In March 2019, Tesla unveiled its Model Y SUV. This car is the final step in their "Secret Master Plan" . Today Tesla very much ahead with lot of promising vehicles, even with lot of competition.

So far, the so-called Tesla killers haven’t killed tesla.

What are they up against?

Firstly, tesla have the best range vehicles in the EV market.

The question is which automaker can compete with Tesla?

The close competitors are Audi E-tron and Jaguar I-Pace.
Then there is Porsche — another unit of Volkswagen started delivering the vehicle from December 2019.

They are planning to follow up with another model with their Porsche macan a crossover vehicle similar to the model Y.

Mainstream electric vehicles include the Chevrolet bolt, a few cars from Hyundai and Honda, kia Nero, Nissan leaf, the Volkswagen e-golf and there are several others which are scheduled to release in 2020 in both the mainstream segment and in the premium segment.

Ford with its mustang mach-e unveiled in November 2019. Ford said it has already reached its order limit for the first edition.

Audi is planning more e-tron variants a high-performance GT, a midsize SUV a Q4 e-tron and BMW is coming with i-4. On the other hand, Mercedes is delaying its EQC model to late 2021.
And Volvo is working on XC their compact SUV and as well as high performance polestar variants.
Automotive giant Volkswagen group is investing billions in EV market.

On November 2019 Tesla unveiled the much-awaited Pickup Truck “THE CYBERTRUCK”. No other car in history broke the internet as much like the Cybertruck did. The Cybertruck was one of the most polarizing designs and people are loving it. 250,000 preorders in less than a week and crossing 500,000 preorders in 90 days shows how much people love this Cybertruck.
This puts tesla as a competitor to the pickup market giants the Ford, gmc and Chevrolet. Ford is coming with its electric version of its best selling f150. GMC is coming with its all electric hummer.
And rivian is coming with their pickup the R1T.

Tesla pushed the limits. When Tesla started making Electric cars none of the traditional car manufacturers are into the EV market and now everyone is into the market and people are willing to pay more. Even though all the traditional car manufacturers are coming into the EV market they still have to match the cult like following brand image of tesla.
