Joan Lunden Behind Closed Doors: Smithsonian Museum

Every year more than 30 million visitors come to the national mall in Washington D.C., to visit the museums and galleries known as the Smithsonian Institution. But even if someone were to visit every museum here, they would only see one percent of the 142- million objects in the collection. Joan Lunden takes us behind closed doors of the Smithsonian's private warehouses in Suitland, Maryland in search of the other 99%. It's a massive four and a half acre facility known as the Museum Support Center. Here, the objects rarely seen by the public are studied, preserved and stored. Think of it as America's Attic.
Of those sixteen museums that make up Smithsonian Institution, the National Air & Space Museum is the most visited. Joan goes behind closed doors of the warehouse where 80% of the Smithsonian's priceless collection of historic air and spacecraft are restored and housed. Joan also gets access inside the locked vault where NASA's spacesuits are being protected.
