Restless Legs medication side effects: what augmentation is, and why most GPs don't name it

Restless Legs medication side effects: there's a word for it that many Australian women never hear from their GP.

It's called augmentation. About one in three on dopamine agonists develop it over time. Symptoms start earlier in the day, they get worse, they spread to your arms.

The 2024 AASM Clinical Practice Guidelines stepped back from those medications, partly for this reason: a conditional recommendation AGAINST the four main dopaminergic agents (pramipexole, ropinirole, rotigotine, levodopa) for chronic Restless Legs Syndrome.

If you're an Australian woman on dopamine agonists for Restless Legs and the symptoms are getting worse instead of better, this has a name and there are alternatives worth discussing at your next consult.
