A message from 32BJ President Manny Pastreich commemorating Justice for Janitors Day 2026!

Today, like every year, we commemorate the brutal beating of SEIU Janitors in the “Battle of Century City,” in Downtown LA on June 15th, 1990, by the police. We also remember all the fights and struggles Janitors across the US have endured over the last decades, to ensure Janitors are respected, and cleaning jobs are good Union jobs.

We especially remember the 1985 Pittsburgh Lockout, when building owners and cleaning contractors tried to cut 600 SEIU Janitors wages in Downtown buildings and we refused, kicking off the Justice for Janitors movement across the nation. Today, we reaffirm our commitment to continue to fight for fair wages, safe working conditions, and respect for all Janitors across 32BJ districts!
