Is Love Selfish? | Nietzsche on What is called Love

In Nietzsche’s book, The Gay Science, he writes on What is Called Love in Book First section 14. As with most sections in The Gay Science, this is a short piece that nevertheless contains ideas that could lead to long discussions. Here, Nietzsche doesn’t give a large manifesto on what love is, but rather, he wants to draw comparisons between love and selfishness (or the lust for property as he calls it).

He takes note of how a lover would want their partner totally and exclusively for themselves. He even illustrates this point by comparing it to a dragon guarding their gold. While it’s true that, generally speaking, monogamous relationships contain this exclusivity between partners, how might this idea apply to polyamorous relationships and open relationships? Furthermore, do we really want total control over our partner, or is there still some individuality in love? #philosophy #nietzsche #philosophyoflove
