Gandhi was a saint, a political leader, a social scientist, a philosopher - all combined into one. To study Gandhi, after going through the topics like capitalism and Marxism, would definitely be an exciting experience for you as Gandhism gave a more formidable challenge to capitalism and Western imperialism, in comparison to Marxism.

The objective of this lecture is to enlighten you on the following issues:

* How did Gandhism pose a challenge to capitalism and Western Imperialism?
* Why was Gandhian mode of protest considered to be more effective than those of Moderates, Extremists and even Marxists?
* How did Gandhi effectively transform the Congress into the vanguard of the largest mass movement in the world?
* How was Gandhian movement multidimensional in nature?
* How is Gandhian legacy visible in Indian as well as World politics?

Perceiving the larger canvas of the topic, it has been divided into two parts for your convenience. My lecture today pertains to the first part and I will be taking a follow-up lecture next Saturday to conclude the topic.
