Animal Friendships: Asian Elephants Bozie and Kamala

A happy tale of animal friendship: A few years ago, Asian elephants Bozie and Kamala had a rocky relationship. Although they shared the same social network, they did not get along and lived separately. Over time, elephant keepers saw an increase in positive interactions between the pair.
. . .
Recently, the team reintroduced Bozie and Kamala face-to-face. Keepers were encouraged to see that these encounters were calm and fruitful. Day by day, the team looked for positive behaviors, allowing the elephants to walk away at their discretion. Each new interaction built on what took place the day before. Today, we are happy to share that our entire herd—Bozie, Kamala, Maharani, Swarna and Spike—has the opportunity to spend time together!
. . .
Bozie and Kamala’s new-found friendship adds another important layer to our herd’s social network. Being able to choose who they spend time with enhances our elephants’ wellbeing and mimics the social experiences of Asian elephants in the wild. Although the individuals they interact with may vary from day to day, the opportunity to socialize helps strengthen the bonds among them.
