DIY WAINSCOTING

Our living room was very bare and we really didn't know what to do with it. My wife looked for ideas online and found waiscotting. The project was easy to do and was relatively inexpensive. The room now feels complete as well as giving it a high end feel.

UPDATE 2021:

I've had so many questions about my room and the size of the squares. Here is the breakdown:

Room size: 12ft x11ft with 8ft tall ceiling.

Because my room wall close to a perfect square, I wanted 4 squares per wall. I simply divided each wall into 4. I used the width of my 4ft level to set the spacing around the edge of each wall. This worked out to be 2 inches. From there, I played around with the spacing and different measurements until I was happy with the spacing. I used 2 inch green painters tape to get a visual of what the room will look like. And here are the final measurements.

For the longer wall, the top squares measure 57 inches tall x 31 inches wide. The bottom squares measures 27 inches tall x 31 inches wide. The spacing between each square is 4 1/4 inches. I spaced the squares 2 inches away for the edge of each wall and ceiling.

For the shorter wall, the top squares measure 57 inches tall x 28 inches wide and 27 inches tall x 28 inches wide. Spacing between the squares and the edge remain the same as the longer walls.

In terms of cost, I don't remember the exact dollar amount but here is the rough estimate:

Trim: $250-$300. I purchased this from my local lumber yard. They had a much better selection than home depot or Lowes and much cheaper. The wood is made of poplar and is a great choice. I wouldn't recommend mdf

Paint/wood filler/tape/construction glue:$70-$100

Total rough estimate $400. I live in Canada so pricing may vary from where you live.

This took project took me 2 days to complete.
