The 10 CHEAPEST CITIES in AMERICA

Everybody wants to save a buck. We use Groupon to get better deals at restaurants and then never go back there again. We share Netflix user names because why pay $12 a month when we can get that for free?

And, when we show up to family gatherings we usually bring a bag of chips JUST for us.

Not you though. Everyone else does that.

The point is, we’re all a little cheap sometimes. But that’s the American way.

Today, we’re going to talk about the cheapest cities in America. Now, by cheap, I’m referring to the cost of living in these places. So if you’re a cheapskate, you’d fit right in. Ideally, people want to move to cheap cities so that they can afford to live without stress.

10. Des Moines, Iowa

The reason Des Moines is so cheap is because of its home price to income ratio and its income to rent ratio. Basically, how much money do you make and how much does it cost to live there. Here in Des Moines, both numbers are in the bottom 10% in the US.

For instance, the average household income in Des Moines is $50,000 and the average cost of a home is around $133,000.

9. Pasadena, Texas

If you thought the home prices in Des Moines made it super affordable to live THERE, it’s even cheaper here in Pasadena. The home price ratio is 2.2 times income, so you could buy a home, and in two years and a couple months, pay the whole thing off.

8. Amarillo, Texas

Here in Amarillo, the home cost to income ratio is 2 years and 5 months. That’s dirt cheap.

Now let’s compare that to our most expensive city in the nation, Los Angeles. Here, the average household incomes are only about $55,000

7. Davenport, Iowa

We cruise into Davenport, our 7th cheapest city in the country.

Sure homes are cheap here - about $124,000 bucks, but in Davenport, it’s the rent to income ratio that really stands out.

6. Cedar Rapids, Iowa

Well it makes sense when you look at Cedar Rapids’ rent to income ratio. You thought Davenport had cheap rent. Here in Cedar Rapids, you could pay for 78 months of rent with one household salary. That’s the 6th most in America - and Cedar Rapids is actually a pretty cool place people.

5. Wichita Falls, Texas

Let’s hop in the beater to go to our next cheapest city in America, Wichita Falls Texas.

4. Rockford, Illinois

We’re taking this vintage automobile somewhere else, up to Rockford, Illinois.

So while some of these Iowa communities are actually charming, Rockford is a real mess.

3. Springfield, Illinois

Right down the road from Rockford is an even cheaper place to live, Springfield, the capital of Illinois. While housing costs are more here, people in Springfield earn significantly higher salaries, too. Like 25% higher.

2. Topeka, Kansas

Okay, so we’re almost done with our cheap tour of America. Our second to last stop brings us to Topeka Kansas.

There isn’t a city in America where it’s cheaper to get groceries.

1. Fort Wayne, Indiana

You should move here and look up a Fort Wayne realtor. This little jewel up in the northern corner of the state can’t brag about a lot, but it CAN hang its hat on being the most affordable place to live in the country for all cities with more than 100,000 people.
