It is widely held that during the time of Muhammad, Petra was in ruins. This was accepted until 1998 when the Petra scrolls were found. These revealed records of a prominent family who lived in Petra during the time of Muhammad. Many churches and temples have also been found supporting pagan religions and Christian religions being practiced in this multicultural trade city. The records prove that Petra was not only not in ruins, but it was thriving when Muhammad was a young man. Everything points to Petra fitting the description of what Mecca claims to be.
