"This piece owes its existence to the moment when I realized the main theme of Paganini's 'La Campanella' could be treated canonically. Everything took off from there, and though the ghost of Liszt is more or less constantly hovering above, there is a good deal of pianistic and harmonic updating here; there are many things in this arrangement that Liszt, even with his penchant for innovation in all areas, would never have allowed himself!

Out of these twelve études, this is the one which was the most significantly revised [not shown in this video or performance]. I believe the piece is now more approachable pianistically, even though the difficulties are still considerable.

Overt rubato should be avoided, and please take good care in playing the introduction in the same tempo as the rest of the piece; do not be tempted to hurry it along. (And while we're at it, please don't play the introduction to Liszt's Feux-Follets at a quicker tempo than what follows! It makes no sense!)" -M.A.H.
