What's Most Important in Wing Chun
We all have to have priorities, right? I mean, making the car payment is more important than eating out. And your wife's birthday is more important than hanging out with your buddies (if not, you have bigger self-defense problems than Wing Chun can solve for you). Well, it's like that in Wing Chun too. Not every technique is of equal importance.
The core of Wing Chun is its Lin Siu Daai Da concept, which means "simultaneous attack and defense. That's the key to the whole thing and the heart and soul of the system. The best defense is indeed a good offense. But we must not oversimplify this and take it to mean we should attack recklessly. Lin Siu Daai Da teaches us to attack with our defense and defend with our attack. They're both "baked into the cake." We don't compromise either with the concept.
For this reason, the basic punch and kick, along with Juen Ma (shifting) and other Wing Chun footwork, as well as controlling techniques that combine with striking are where we should put most of our training time. Some techniques, like Kwan Sao, for example, though important, aren't AS important as more direct control and attack measures. Confusion on this point can lead us to become tactically confused. It can lead to us trying to use "corrective" techniques because we think we have to when, instead, we should be focused on nullifying the enemy's attack with our own.
Understanding this critical truth about the Wing Chun combat theory leads to us spending our training time with wisdom. We'll focus on the basics - and especially on footwork and shifting while striking.
