Perfect Media Server Part 3 | How to build a self-hosted media server

Perfect Media Server Part 3 is finally here. In this full step-by-step guide, I install Proxmox from scratch and build a working open source home media server using MergerFS, SnapRAID, Samba, Docker, and Jellyfin. By the end, we have storage mounted, disks pooled, parity configured, network shares working, and a Jellyfin server ready to use.

This guide is for anyone who wants to build a flexible NAS or media server from used hardware, mismatched hard drives, and free open source software. We cover Proxmox installation, static IP setup, stable disk IDs, formatting and mounting drives, MergerFS pooling, SnapRAID parity and checksumming, Docker Compose, Samba shares, Jellyfin setup, and Intel Quick Sync hardware transcoding.
