An introduction by Carmen Bambach, curator, Department of Drawings and Prints, The Metropolitan Museum of Art

This exhibition is the first ever dedicated to Agnolo Bronzino (1503 - 1572), and presents nearly all the known drawings by or attributed to this leading Italian Mannerist artist, who was active primarily in Florence. A painter, draftsman, academician, and enormously witty poet, Bronzino became famous as the court artist to the Duke Cosimo I de' Medici and his beautiful wife, the Duchess Eleonora di Toledo. This monographic exhibition contains approximately sixty drawings from European and North American collections, many of which have never before been on public view.

An afternoon of lectures focusing on this leading Italian Mannerist artist. Speakers include Elizabeth Cropper, Dean, Center for Advanced Study in the Visual Arts, National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.; James Fenton, poet, journalist, and critic; Lucia Meoni, independent scholar; Deborah Parker, Professor, Department of Spanish, Italian, and Portuguese, University of Virginia; and Louis A. Waldman, Assistant Director for Programs, Villa I Tatti—The Harvard Center for Italian Renaissance Studies, and Associate Professor, Department of Art and Art History, University of Texas at Austin.

This Sunday at the Met is made possible in part by the Italian Cultural Institute of New York.
