Hi Travis and Suzi! I LOVED your recent reaction to a scene from Strauss’ opera Elecktra! In fact, Henrique’s request inspired me to share a scene from another expressionistic opera, “Ariane et Barbe-Bleue” by Paul Dukas (doo-KAH’). Dukas was an incredibly tongue-tied composer who kept writing works and then burning them because he didn’t believe they lived up to his standards. In total, he only ever published fourteen works during his rather long life. Dukas is best known for the orchestral tone poem “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice” (yes, the music that was later used in the Disney animated movie “Fantasia,” where Mickey Mouse summons the out of control mops that flood his master’s chambers). The title character, Ariane, who is Blue Beard’s soon to be sixth wife, discovers that his five previous wives, previously thought to be dead, are being held captive in the lower levels of his castle. In this scene, Araine attempts to free them. Ultimately, they do not want to leave and are happy as long as she will stay with them. This only opera by Dukas deserves to be as well known as the operas of his German counterparts Strauss and Wagner (VAHG-nir). Frankly, and not to throw shade on the all the Andrew Lloyd Webber fans out there, it was better than “Cats.”
