8 Cities with NO Cars!!

1. Fes el Bali, Morocco.
Fes el Bali has 9,400 different winding streets and alleyways that are all far too thin for cars so its population of over 150,000 people gets around on foot, by donkey, or on carts. The city is over 1000 years old, and sprawling over 300 hectares, it's one of the largest continuous car-free urban areas in the world.

2. Lamu, Kenya.
Lamu is a car-free island that has a population of over 25,000 people. The island is accessible by boat but once you arrive, the narrow streets and tightly packed houses make transport difficult. The locals go by foot or on bike or with a donkey and since the only way to transport load is with a donkey, it's not surprising that the island is home to over 3000 and even has its own Donkey sanctuary.

3. Ghent, Belgium.
Ghent wasn't always car-free, but in 1996, in an effort to reduce population and the declining air quality, the 35 hectares of the town's center were pedestrianized. Buses and trams are the main forms of public transport in the center but over 400 kilometers of bike paths have made cycling the preferred form of transportation and this has also caused a culture change where bicycles now have right of way over cars.

4. Zermatt, Switzerland.
This alpine town is a combustion engine car-free area, the closest you can get to it in a car is the town of Tasch, approximately 5km away, and from there you have to board a train to Zermatt.
The 6000 residents of Zermatt get around by foot, on a bike, by ski lift, Horse-drawn carriages, eShuttles, eTaxis, or eBuses. The only exceptions are emergency vehicles such as ambulances and the rescue helicopter.

5. Giethoorn.
Also known as "Venice of the North". Giethoorn is a beautiful town in Northeast Holland that isn't just car-free, it's road-free too! Its 2,400 inhabitants get around by foot, on a bike, or by boats along its many canals.
Giethoorn has 167 bridges and around 600 different boats, including (oddly enough) a FireBoat.

6. Civita Di Bagnoregio.
Located right on top of a hill, Civita is only accessible by this single 270-meter-long footbridge and there's no other way in and out. This footbridge and the town's thin streets and alleyways aren't wide enough for cars and so donkeys and mopeds are used to carry supplies to the town's shops and restaurants.

7. The Island of Sark.
This Channel island is completely car-free. Sark has no airport and the only way to get there is by a small ferry or a high-speed passenger ferry that only operates in summer. The island's inhabitants get around using bikes, horses, and carts, in fact, the only motor-powered vehicles on the island are tractors, even the island's ambulance is a cart that gets pulled along behind a tractor!

8. Venice, Italy.
Perhaps the most famous car-free city, Venice is built on 118 different islands in a lagoon. It has 177 canals and 416 bridges. Its population of around 55,000 people gets around by waterbuses called "Vaporetti", WaterTaxis, or on foot.
There are around 400 licensed gondoliers in Venice but the Gondola is only really used by tourists or for special events such as weddings and funerals.
