DJI Mavic Air 2 fly more combo Review and comparison with Parrot Anafi and Snap - Our first review and comparison of the Mavic Air 2
First impressions, first flight. Right after the first takeoff, I got the impression that it is very solid. It was surprisingly quiet as well, the low tone isn’t very disturbing at all. its size is in the perfect balance of small enough to hike with, yet big enough to handle various conditions, and be fairly discreet. On the first flight we waited until just before sundown for the batteries to charge, and it did very well in low light. It also was very clear that the connection was solid in a dense wifi area. The first flight gave no problems at all and performed in a controlled and familiar way. Flight performance, range, battery, exclusive features, controller.
On our second day, it handles the wind incredibly well. It must have hit a wind gust because here the time remaining dropped to about 6 min which made me concerned for a moment. This included a hyperlapse and there was a very light breeze. Getting the full 34 minutes out of it would be difficult but likely possible if you were okay with flying till 0% most of the time you can expect 20-25 min max in normal flying, which honestly is more than enough, especially with the fly more combo that gives an hour and 15 min of flying with the 3 batteries. The exclusive features such as active track, ads b air sense, and apas are very useful. Active track so easy to use and appears to have no issues, it even will switch to GPS track if it loses its subject. very useful even if you are like me and prefer to manually track and with apas just having that extra bit of warning with lets you feel very confident getting closer to subjects like this rock face here with the avoidance disabled. Also, there appears to be future compliance with remote-id built into the app. The controller is very well engineered and comfortable to hold. The control sticks are not overly sensitive and can be nudged to fly and pan very slowly giving the ability to combine movements very smoothly. Image quality, camera settings, app as far as image quality, its a bit of a mixed bag. with excellent color accuracy, auto white balance delivers good results most of the time, very sharp focus, good wide, and fairly decent low light performance. when it gets darker you can expect a lot of noise and loss of detail, some of which can be recovered in post by denoising and sharpening, but the mp2 would be a better choice for you if you need low light. While the quality will certainly make you wow out loud most of the time, it can leave you wanting more other times. If you have ever used a full-frame sensor, while it isn’t really fair to compare, it won’t come close to matching in some scenarios. Photos are very good, and the 48mp setting gives superb detail. in hyperlapse mode it limits the video to HD and 8K, but you can save the jpg or raw files and make a video from the stills in post, yet you can’t do that with 48mp photos, a feature I wish it had. HDR has had mixed results, while it is great in a golden hour shot, it tends to over saturate and bring up shadow noise in most other scenarios, which using 8bit again would be better to do in post so it's not baked in. at low sun angles, it does seem to recover some of the sky and sun disk. also in HDR you cannot lock or set custom exposure. Comparison to Anafi and snap our main drone has been the parrot Anafi for the past year, and it has been a very good experience. but parrot may want to consider dropping their price by half. the ma2 outperforms it in every way except two. has basically free fpv mode, we got a cheap pair of goggles from a thrift store and they work quite well. also, Anafi can look straight up. That brings up one problem with the ma2 which is that in sport at high pitch angles, the gimble runs out of vertical and snaps down, so you have to plan for it if you don’t want to ruin the shot. The Anafi is quieter by a tiny bit, but it has more of a whine to it, so it may be more disturbing in a way. Anafi's skycontroller 3 is very nice but clearly not as well made. the controls are a bit over sensitive feeling, but that can be fixed by setting gimble speed lower if you need smooth shots. not to mention anafi’s controller is about half as good or less at maintaining video feed at range, dense wifi, and around obstacles. The Anafi, while lighter, has slightly less battery life at 25min max and usually about 20 in hard flight. Anafi doesn’t handle wind very well by comparison and will twirl around in a gust and lose ruin the shot at max throttle. Anafi’s image falls well behind since it’s 2 axis gimble relies on digital crop stabilization to smooth out the horizontal, and this can be apparent in shadow areas with loss of detail.
