Ferrite Noise Choke
The small Black ceramic cylinder that comes with your Voice over IP phone is a Ferrite noise core. It clamps on to the network cable that feeds from the phone to another PC. Sometimes referred to as a "noice choke"
While it is not required to make the VoIP phone function, it is a recommended practice to install it if it's available.. This prevents noise generated on the PC (or laptop) from inducing interference in the audio on the phone.
VoIP phones are not the only application of these. These are used frequently where equipment that is sensitive to EMI (electro-magnetic interference).
