How to grow avocado tree from seed

Growing an avocado tree houseplant from seed is easy if you follow the steps below:

1. Take the pit (seed or stone) from a fresh avocado, clean it up and insert 3 or 4 cocktail sticks into it so that it is supported in a plastic cup or beaker

2. As you can see in the video, after a few weeks, a sprout will break the pit open at the bottom (broad or flat end) and a few weeks later the small plant or tree will start to grow from the narrow end

3. Plant in soil or hydroponics container/glass jar of water at around 12 to 20 weeks

This video is about how to grow an avocado tree as a houseplant from the seed (pit or stone) of a fresh avocado and check its progress. All you need is the undamaged seed from a fresh avocado, 3 or 4 cocktail sticks, a plastic cup of water and 4-8 weeks of patience.

The small tree or plant can then be grown in clean soil or hydroponically in water. (Growing hydroponically is not something that's easy to cover, but is much less hassle than you might expect. One of the plants was also grown this way and hasn't been given any nutrients in a year, and is fine. However, this will probably not always be the case.)

If the avocado tree is potted in soil, keep the soil moist but not soggy.

Video shows some stages of growth. Typically, nothing much happens for a few weeks and then the pit broad base splits open and a root sprouts, followed by the plant itself growing from a split at the narrow part of the pit. It then goes on to produce avocado leaf buds. These are very attractive to small insects which may get inside your home to feast on the leaves - be warned!

The seedlings shown in this video are still alive and well 14 months after the video was shot. Brown leaves (most removed) were caused by over-exposure to very intense and hot summer sun, if you're wondering!

NB Young avocado leaves attract small insects - be careful to keep these insects under control until the plant or tree is established with large leaves.
