Quick 6 tips on disciplining children | Expert advice
How should you discipline your child? Parents ask that question all the time. Here are six quick tips:
1. Don't confuse discipline with punishment. Discipline guides children. Punishment hurts them. Consequences teach them. The consequence also has to align with the infraction.
2. Remember that the most important form of feedback is encouragement. Some children aren't motivated by praise alone, though. In those cases, having sticker charts or some sort of rewards can be very useful in the short term. They need to be phased out eventually.
3. When a situation arises between children, there is usually an aggressor and a victim. Rather than confront the aggressor first, go to the victim. Then work with the victim to arm them with assertive language.
4. Avoid using "time outs."
5. Be clear and consistent with your partner about what kind of skills and behavior you want in your children.
6. Set the foundation for your child early. Disciplining your child grows more difficult as they grow older and are influenced by more things around them.
