Heddon's Mouth Walk. Exmoor Walks. North Devon. Devon Beaches. Easy Walks. Exmoor National Park.

Join me on a Walk to Heddon's Mouth, Exmoor. We start at The Hunters Inn (national trust) Heddon Valley, Jose's Ln, Barnstaple EX31 4PY. If you are not a member you have to pay to park, we paid £5 for all day. Beware of the narrow single track roads, there is a long way around instead of driving down Jose's Lane which we later found out.
The easier walk was closed due to flooding and erosion so there are some inclines to walk which my legs are certainly feeling right now. Disabled buggies are available to hire s that would not be a problem even though the easy route was closed.
At the head of the beach, you will pass a 19th Century lime kiln, restored by the National Trust in 1982. Limestone and coal were brought across the Bristol Channel from South Wales and burnt in the kiln to make the lime needed to counteract the acidity of the local soil.

The towering cliffs at either side of Heddon’s Mouth are some of the highest in England – made from Devonian sandstone formed around 400 million years ago. The mouth of the valley opens out into a boulder, pebble and shingle beach, with curious seals often around in the bay, checking out the visitors.
