Frooti or Maaza - Which One Is The Mango King Of India

In the 1970s after launching Limca and Thumbs up like carbonated drinks, owner of Parle-agro group, Prakash Chauhan noticed a huge market gap in India's beverage industry. He observed that a popular and one of the most loved drinks in Indian households, Aamras (mango juice) is completely ignored in this sector. Mango was not available as a juice in a bottled format anywhere in the market. So he launched India's 1st mango drink 'Mazza' in glass bottles among the dominating sugary carbonated drinks. Indians being crazy about mango loved it and soon Maaza became an instant hit. It was readily available at grocery shops, movie theaters, bus and railway stations all through the year. By 1980s it became popular as the 'mango king' of India.
But Parle company here observed, maintenance and transportation of these fragile glass bottles to be difficult and also not consumer friendly.
So in 1985 parle group introduced the mango drink in a Tetra pack and called it 'Frooti'. Unlike Maaza, Frooti was an affordable, pocket size, easy to carry mango drink to be launched for the first time in Tetra pack in India. This was a game changing move and soon it became popular among kids and families. While maaza kept on to be the popular choice among young adults.
People thought frooti and maaza to be rivals, but actually they were the part of a genius marketing strategy attracting different age group consumers by their parent company, Parle Industries.
