This is the early Type VIIC submarine, which when done is long out of stock. Nowadays it is only the VII C/41 with snorkel etc. I have wanted this since it was released (as when this was in use it was still feared opponent and successful weapon), but I didn't buy it right away as I thought it will we available easily later. Then 41 version came and this is not been available since. Then I found one (after 10 years) as second hand and here she is.

I wanted to build early version with wire cutter on the nose as it looks much cooler than later which is without one. I wouldn't have liked to make this into famous U-Boot U-96 from the book/film, but there was no option for decals to another early boat. There are some very nice painting options for U-201, U-204, U-251 and U-617, but those were later versions without wire cutter and those faith was even worse than with U-96 sunk after air-raid in port, so those were out of the question.
This is very battered, I thought what it could look after six months in sea, but still the conning tower is too rusty and has too large paint chips to my taste. I used chipping fluid and it worked better for the hull than conning tower, you can't control how chipping fluid works too well. I haven't glued the sail into place if I get some inspiration to make it less chippy/rusty some time..
