Chomsky sums up his thoughts on language, creative capacity and social organisation.
Noam Chomsky gives a summary of the major themes that have dominated his life and work and informed his political activism. Here he puts classical liberalism back in its original context as a set of principles which emerged from the Enlightenment tradition that sought to understand human nature by determining the conditions that cultivate spontaneous free expression through language and creative thought appropriate to actions and consequences which lead to emancipation from authoritarian systems of organisation. Chomsky sees capitalism as a system which obstructs this process by subverting traditional libertarian principles in favour of more coercive forms of authoritarian control. In this regard, the organisational structures that capitalism elicits cannot be considered legitimate, since they impede human nature in the cultivation of thoughts and actions appropriate for establishing social conditions that would otherwise free human beings to determine their own voluntary, creative and productive associations without coercion. Chomsky, instead, regards classical anarchism the natural extension of classical liberalism, and the principles of classical liberalism consistent with modern anarchist/libertarian socialist tradition. In essence, if emancipation is the goal of humanity, then we have been going in the wrong direction for the past 200 years.
