Ag Policy Connection: Should we make sustainability Canada’s #1 competitive advantage?
A "competitive advantage" in the business world refers to factors that allow a company to produce goods or services for more value than their rivals. It's when a business is better at making, selling, and ultimately, profiting from a product than their competitors.
Canada's agriculture and food sector, as a whole, has a strong story to tell when it comes to sustainability. And while there are different definitions, sustainability is increasingly important to customers at home and around the world.
That leads us to the big question on this special edition of the Ag Policy Connection podcast, recorded on stage at the Canadian Agri-Food in a Sustainable World conference held at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa earlier this month.
Should sustainability be Canada's number one competitive advantage?
Hosted by RealAgriculture's Shaun Haney, the discussion includes the following panelists:
Jean-Michel Couture, President and Partner, Group AGÉCO, a Quebec-based consulting firm that works in the area of ag economics and sustainability;
Nick Betts, Managing Director, Canadian Alliance for Net-Zero Agri-food (CANZA), a group of organizations and companies committed to moving Canadian agriculture toward net zero emissions (Nick's also a returning guest to the Ag Policy Connection);
Ben Gibbons, Founder & Managing Partner, Waterpoint Lane, a venture capital fund investing at the intersection of technology, sustainability, and the food system;
Stuart Person, National Leader of Crop Services, MNP, one of Canada's largest accounting and professional services firms.
Their answers and the following discussion to the big question about sustainability as Canada's biggest competitive advantage may surprise you, and are certainly thought-provoking when it comes to the future of Canadian agriculture and food.
