The La's | Album Review: One Hit Wonders?
The La's self-titled debut album may have been disowned by Lee Mavers, the Liverpool band's leader, but its timeless melodies have won the band a passionate fanbase. There She Goes may be the only La's song many people know, but its parent album boasts 11 other gems - from Way Out and Doledrum to Feelin' and I.O.U. - that deserve to be heard by a much wider audience. Building their sound on the rhythm and blues originators as much as the 60s British rock canon of The Beatles and The Stones et al, the songs on 'The La's' fizz with an energy syphoned straight from the roots of rock and roll. Its foundations run deeper than most of the Brit Pop bands that followed in their wake. And while Lee Mavers' disappointment with the production may lead him to consider the album to be an albatross around his neck, to The La's fans, it's nothing less than a gold medal.
