They Said No Bomber Could Survive 25 Missions — Then Came The Memphis Belle

MEMPHIS BELLE & HER SISTERS: The True Story of America’s Flying Fortresses

England.
From muddy airfields to the frozen skies above Germany, a handful of young airmen and the women who built their bombers fought an invisible countdown — 25 missions to survive.

The “Memphis Belle” became the first B-17 to complete all 25. Her story — and those of the crews who didn’t return — came to symbolize courage, fear, and endurance in the air war over Europe.

Behind every flight were mechanics freezing on open runways, factory women riveting steel wings, and mothers waiting by radios.
This is the story of the Flying Fortresses — and the people who made them fly.

KEY FACTS

Boeing B-17F “Memphis Belle” completed her 25th mission on May 17, 1943.

Crewed by Captain Robert Morgan and nine airmen of the 324th Bomb Squadron, 91st Bomb Group (8th Air Force).

Filmed in color by the U.S. Army Air Forces for William Wyler’s documentary “Memphis Belle” (1944).

“Belle” flew from Bassingbourn, England, targeting German industrial centers like Kiel, Bremen, and Wilhelmshaven.

Over 77% of bomber crews in the 8th Air Force were killed, wounded, or captured before completing 25 missions.

The aircraft was restored and displayed at the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force, Dayton, Ohio.

Women of the Rosie the Riveter workforce built over 12,000 B-17s during the war.
