'IWIAS' or 'ARUTAMS' are Ecuadorian elite soldiers, composed exclusively of indigenous people of Ecuador mostly Shuar and Achuar. They are considered to be jungle warfare experts and are able to survive weeks and weeks in the Amazone rainforest without any supplies. Their training consists of surviving, navigating and jungle warfare deep in the lush rainforests. These are protectors of the race and the homeland. The Iwias are around 60.000 men strong and are considered to be masters in Jungle warfare. After the Paquisha conflict (1981), Colonel General staff, Gonzalo Barragán, raised the high command of the Ecuadoran army the formation of a special group composed exclusively of natives of the Ecuadorian East region which became known as the Force IWIAS. In 1995 the IWIAS intervened in the fighting occurred, against the Peruvian troops in the conflict of the Alto Cenepa in sectors of Cueva de los Tayos, Base Sur, Coangos and alongside the banks of the Río Cenepa. In 2006, by order of command, "Iwias" school separates from the special operations battalion N ° 23, dedicating itself completely to form elite soldiers to fight in the jungle. Since its formation, this unit is considered in Ecuador as the most lethal force that possesses the Ecuadorian army.
To date have graduated more than 18 promotions, which have formed part of the units of the IV Division of jungle, "Amazon", and battalion operations in jungle N ° 23 "IWIAS".

The group is comprised of the following ethnic groups:
-Shuar
-Achuar
-Huaoranis
-Tagaeris (better known as 'Aucas')
-Taromenames
-Others: 'Secoyas' , 'Shiviar' and 'Quichuas amazónicos'.
This community (more than 100,000 indigenous people) is located in the Ecuadorian Amazon region, in the provinces of Morona Santiago, Napo, Pastaza and Zamora. The courses and specialties of the Iwias consists out of:

IWIA: This course training is for combat missions deep in the jungle as part of a combat team, through the application of techniques of special operations.

WAÑUCHIC: Wanuchic means matador or the jungle killer/Hunter, suitable for hunting and to counter attack by their opponents when they are in conflict with another tribes.

ÑAUPAK: Naupac means to proceed, going forward, precursor.
The IWIA is trained to carry out infiltration using means River, air and land in order to select heliports, taking Beach heads and make rescues from helicopters, special on jungle operations.
