★ 4K Samedan - Preda, Cargo train driver's view, Switzerland [10.2020]
For the first time from Paolo, a 4K trip with a freight train in beautiful weather in the mountains of Graubünden, Switzerland. For first time viewers, we are travelling with Paolo, a driver on the RhB network in south eastern Switzerland, the largest narrow gauge rail operator in the country.
Not only is the scenery amazing, but the rolling stock is also largely unique to this operator, with some locomotives dating back to the 1940's that are still in regular service (although, their days are numbered). Also rare in this setting, is the amount of freight that is still transported by train. In today's video we'll take a glimpse into a freight operation.
We start in Samedan with our locomotive, the 1994 built Ge 4/4 III. We begin by manoeuvring it to the train on a siding. You'll notice that on the siding, there is no main signal, only a shunting signal (with the two white lights). As a main signal is required in order to leave the station, the train must again be manoeuvred to an adjacent track, before departure.
The load consists of 3 cement wagons, which are required for the construction of the new Albula tunnel in Preda. Along the way, we stop in Spinas to pick up a refuse container on a stake car, which will be taken to Chur for recycling company by the name of Vögele.
In Preda, the 3 cement wagons we brought are uncoupled from the refuse wagon and marshalled to two other cement wagons, before we take the locomotive to the other side of the train, recouple with the refuse container wagon and collect an empty stake wagon before heading back to Samedan.
This may have been the first time a Ge 4/4 III was used to serve the Spinas and Preda construction stations, as this service is usually carried out by a Ge 4/4 I (has also been recorded and will come out at a future date.)
In a few years, this video will be an historical document of what once was, as both construction stations in Spinas and Preda that have been built to serve the construction of the new Albula tunnel will have been removed.
