Fly to Camera, PART 5: Photographic Study of Parrot Flight - African Grey, Jenday Conure

In Part 5, we really liked the way the project was going, so we standardized our technique of taking still photos while simultaneously recording a video of each flight. We matched each still photo with the exact video frame that corresponded to the photo. We then inserted the still photographs within the video--next to that frame. The one thing we didn't always do that seemed to be important was showing the position of the SLR camera in relation to the bird and to the video camera. Therefore, we now made sure to include a view of the SLR in every flight video.

The lighting was almost perfect. The sun was streaming in from the side, which put light across both, the front and top of the subject. The feathers almost glowed! In order to prevent too much light saturation, we kept the blinds closed at the top of the window on the sun-side. This produced a cool 3-D effect, with streaks of light and dark on the bodies and wings of the birds. We debated whether to open the blinds all the way, but decided we preferred it this way. It also made it easy to observe the similarities and differences in perspective between the video camera angle and the SLR camera angle.

This session took place after the birds had several months more practice flying. Therefore, their flight skills were also better as well. The session ran fairly long, so we broke it into two parts. Part 5 is the first half of the session.
