Sanja Matsuri festival is held every May at the Asakusa shrine in Tokyo. For 3 days many groups carry the mikoshi (divine palanquins) of the kami (gods) around the neighborhood. Almost 2 million visitors participate each year in the event where dozens of mikoshi are shown, carried, and then brought back to the main shrine. A mikoshi can weigh 1 ton and cost up to 400,000 USD. Inside the palanquin there is a hidden object that represents the kami, a spirit or god venerated by the represented group. This is one of the largest matsuri (festivals) in Tokyo.
