The Influence of Technology in the Creative Process | Garbage | Talks at Google

Garbage is an alternative rock band whose members are Scottish musician Shirley Manson (vocals, guitar) and American musicians Butch Vig (percussion), Duke Erikson (guitar, keyboards), and Steve Marker (guitar, keyboards). Garbage have sold over 17 million albums worldwide.

Garbage is currently on their “20 Years Paranoid” tour to celebrate their seminal second album, Version 2.0. The album was released in May 1998 off the back of their multi platinum selling, self-titled debut. The band is performing Version 2.0 in its entirety including all the accompanying b sides to the singles that were released throughout the album campaign. Version 2.0 is one of the first albums in history to take advantage of digital technology and went on to sell over 4 million copies worldwide. The album also saw great success spawning 4 Grammy nominations, including Album of the Year.

While in town for their tour, Garbage sat down with Googler Laura Paragano to talk about the influence of technology in their creative process these past 20 years. Garbage discusses their continued drive to use technology to break ground in recording and performing. They also discuss how social media has allowed them to remain connected to their fans.
