The End of an Incredible Forest School Year: Handmade Journals, Celebration & Reflection

Thirty weeks.

Thirteen weeks of fall.
Four weeks of winter.
Thirteen weeks of spring.

And just like that, Year 2 of Spark Nature Forest School has come to a close.

For our final day together, we slowed down and reflected on everything we've experienced throughout the year, from building a nature playground and whittling butter knives to field trips, art projects, stream adventures, and countless moments of wonder in the woods.

We also created handmade field journals using felt, recycled paper, sticks, and twine. The children foraged for sticks to create the spines of their books, learned simple bookbinding techniques, and wrote their first journal entry reflecting on their favorite week of forest school.

The overwhelming favorites?

Whittling and the zip line. 😄

Of course, no celebration would be complete without food. We made fresh butter, shucked corn, enjoyed watermelon, grilled hot dogs, and shared a meal together as a community.

The day ended with certificates, patches, gratitude, and a chance to acknowledge everything these children have accomplished over the past year.

At Spark Nature, we believe children thrive when they are given opportunities to create, contribute, explore, take risks, build skills, and connect deeply with nature and community.

More than anything, we hope this program has been a place where children felt capable, valued, and inspired.
