V2X #shorts

This is something called v2i, or vehicle to infrastructure. This is part of a larger piece of technology called v2x - where the x represents everything - infrastructure, other cars, pedestrians, and a central network. So yeah this light thing is cool, but the overall picture is much larger. A vehicle will collect data points. These can range from weather conditions and traffic to items of larger importance like crashes or emergency vehicles. And the infrastructure, in this case roads and traffic signals, will do this as well. All of this combined creates a digital picture of what’s happening on our roads. And this data is fed to other people - thats where some more acronyms come in. We start with v2v which is vehicle to vehicle. If there’s a crosswalk ahead with a pedestrian about to cross, the leading vehicle would communicate that to the car behind it, who would then pass it to the vehicle behind it, and so on. Eventually all cars will know there’s a person crossing there, and come to a stop. But if the leading vehicle can’t stop, what if it could alert the pedestrian on their phone? This is called v2p or vehicle to pedestrian. At the same time, the vehicle would communicate to the infrastructure that it’s passing through the crosswalk, the cars behind would communicate that they’re not, and the infrastructure can illuminate the lights on the crosswalk once it’s safe to cross. And understandably all of this is pretty complicated. We need a central network to keep track of what’s happening everywhere, and route things in the most efficient way possible. That’s what v2n, or vehicle to network is. This central mainframe would see construction on a road and divert cars away unless absolutely necessary. Or it could notate where potholes are so if a car is traveling by itself late at night without any other cars around, it will still know where the pothole is. And the name for all of this together is v2x - and is probably at least 20 years away from reality. But the beginning pieces exist.
