Treating chronic fatigue

Chronic fatigue is a mysterious condition. Rather than simply being knackered, something many of us are familiar with, sufferers experience a disabling level of fatigue that is present on most days and stays with them for months and even years. It's often associated with a range of physical symptoms like headaches, aches and pains. It can have a devastating effect on people's lives, with very few able to work, and also having a major impact on their relationships. They also tend to suffer high rates of mental illnesses like depression. Treating sufferers with cognitive behavioural therapy to teach them to reformulate their thinking about their fatigue can help, as can doing more exercise. Norman Swan sits down with a leading expert in the field. From the Tonic series produced with the assistance of NPS. First screened on ABC2 in Australia.
