A Smash Bros Series Retrospective

Smash Bros has been through a lot of changes over its 20 year tenure. The Smash we know today is a far cry from Masahiro Sakurai's original vision of Smash, with every game along the way adding its own touches towards making the perfect game. Smash 64 may have opened the door, but it was Melee that elevated the series to iconic levels. Melee was so good that the game still has a thriving community even today. But for as amazing as that was, it was not the game Sakurai wanted it to be. Brawl was built to correct the series' trajectory, and while controversial, added many advancements that have carried through to today. Like Brawl before it, Smash 4 took deliberate action to stop the game from being played 'wrong', and yet would find that it had again pushed back too hard. Sakurai and the players wanted very different things from Smash Bros, and Ultimately, bringing these differences together would be exactly what the series had always needed.
