Breast Biopsy Wire Localization: Step-by-Step Guide

A breast biopsy is a procedure to remove tissue from the breast for examination under a microscope. It is used to diagnose breast cancer and other conditions.

Wire localization is a type of breast biopsy in which a thin wire is inserted into the breast to guide the surgeon to the abnormal area. This type of biopsy is often used when the abnormal area is too small to be felt by touch or is difficult to see on imaging tests.

Procedure:

The radiologist will inject a small amount of anesthetic into the breast to numb the area.
Using the mammogram as a guide, the radiologist will insert a thin wire into the breast and move the end of it towards the area of abnormality.
The radiologist will perform another mammogram to verify that the wire has been placed correctly.
The patient will then be transferred to the operating table.
The surgeon will make a small incision in the breast and follow the wire to the abnormal area.
The surgeon will remove the abnormal tissue and send it to a laboratory for examination.
The surgeon will close the incision and apply a dressing.
