Italian Customs and Folklore @ItalianRootsandGenealogy #superstition #sicily #sicilia #neworleans

Have you ever wondered about the origins of our customs, like putting money in a new purse or wallet?

Although most of us claim to be skeptical of these old-world beliefs, we still are reluctant to reject them completely. We fondly hold on to them and regard them like old photographs of departed loved ones called Nonna, Nonno, Ziu, Zia. They are snapshots that evoke memories of cherished voices admonishing us to remove a hat indoors, cross ourselves when we drop a piece of bread, or take our elbow off the table. We avow that with all of our learning we are just too sophisticated to seriously give these adages any credence. They are curiosities of bygone days that we share while humoring their eccentricities. Yet, we share the precautions along with modern day Italians who, while looking over our shoulders, say, Nun ci crirri, ma guardati. “Don’t believe any of it; but watch yourself.”
