The Irish Mexican Alliance – "On Raglan Road"

March 17, 2019 – Given that some in the body politic are clamoring for walls between nations, we at the Irish Mexican Alliance have another idea. How about bringing cultures together through music and the arts? You do not have to be Irish or Mexican to be part of the Irish Mexican Alliance. It is a metaphor for cross-cultural solidarity, a human connection that exists above and beyond nation states. This Alliance began ten years ago between a group of Irish Americans in NYC and Chicanos/Mexican Americans in the borderland of El Paso. This rendition of "On Raglan Road", a revered Irish folk song by poet Patrick Kavanagh, done here in both English and Spanish, is a manifestation of that alliance. In a recording studio in Manhattan in January 2019, eight musicians – four Irish or Irish American and four Latino – embraced the beauty of this song with all their talent.

The recording session – and the music video – were executive produced and directed by T.J. English, a NY Times best-selling author and co-founder of the Irish Mexican Alliance.

Lyrics by Patrick Kavanaugh, with Spanish translation by Christina Gurrola.
