The country song "Tennessee Whiskey" was written by Dean Dillon and Linda Hargrove. David Allan Coe, a country music performer from the United States, first recorded it for his album of the same name, Tennessee Whiskey. In 1981, his version of the song reached number 77 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles list. The song was covered by George Jones in 1983 for his album Shine On, and it peaked at number two on the Hot Country Singles list.

Numerous singers have covered the song, notably, Chris Stapleton, whose breakthrough performance at the Country Music Association (CMA) Awards alongside Justin Timberlake helped the song gain further notoriety. The Recording Industry Association of America has awarded Stapleton's recording of the song a Diamond certification (RIAA).
